چکیده

The influence of radiation damage on energy resolution, linearity and uniformity of an electromagnetic lead/scintillator calorimeter was studied experimentally with 1–6GeV electrons. Plastic scintillators and wavelength shifter bars were irradiated uniformly with γ rays. Both were identical with those of the ZEUS uranium calorimeter. The attenuation length of the scintillators was determined from bench tests of single scintillator tiles and from beam tests of the whole calorimeter. After exposure to a dose of 10 kGy the attenuation length of the scintillators decreased by a factor of 2. The experimental results show that the irradiation of the nearly 2 m long wavelength shifter bars affects the calorimeter much more than the damage of the scintillators which were only 19 cm long. Damaged and undamaged sections of the calorimeter were scanned with a moving radioactive γ source (60Co). The results demonstrate that the 60Co monitor system is a very precise tool to detect radiation damage in a sampling calorimeter.

CLAS-Note 96-011 The reaction p(e,e'p)π0 to calibrate the Forward and the Large Angle Electromagnetic Shower Calorimeters

The energy calibration of the two electromagnetic shower calorimeters (forward and large angle) of CLAS is proposed using the reaction p(e,e’p)π° like a uniform source of monochromatic pions. A preliminary study to understand the reaction kinematics, the energy range and the calibration feasibility as well as an estimate of the counting rate is presented. 1.1 F.E.S.C in CLAS The CLAS Forward an...

We built and tested on charged particle beams the high energy-resolution calorimeter for the CHORUS experiment, which searches for νμ-ντ oscillations in the CERN Wide Band Neutrino beam. This calorimeter is longitudinally divided into three sectors: one electromagnetic and two hadronic. The first two upstream sectors are made of lead and plastic scintillating fibers in a volume ratio of 4/1, an...

Study of Hadronic and Electromagnetic Shower Development between 10 and 140 Gev by an Iron - Scintillator Calorimeter

Results are presented on the analysis of CDHS test beam data using an iron-scintillator calorimeter exposed to electrons and pions in the energy range 10 to 140 GeV. Shower development is studied in order to extract information on calorimetric response to electrons and pions, longitudinal and transverse shower profiles, shower containment and correlations, muon punch through and the effect on e...

The production of radiation tolerant vacuum phototriodes and their HV filters for the Compact Muon Solenoid endcap electromagnetic calorimeter

Particle detectors which will operate at the Large Hadron Collider face unprecedented challenges in both the number of active detector elements and in operating without maintenance in a high radiation environment for many years. In the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector the scintillating crystal electromagnetic calorimeter uses vacuum photodetectors in the endcap where the lifetime neutron an...
